Open House Chicago

10:00 AM – 5:00 PM

Mark the Date! October 17th & 18th St. Nicholas Cathedral will participate in Open House Chicago, opening its doors to thousands of visitors! Whether you've walked by and wondered what this magnificent structure looks like on the inside, if you're a regular sunday visitor, we welcome all to come learn about the cathedral, its incredible art and architecture, and so much more! From the Chicago Architecture site: DETAILS: There are many Byzantine churches in Chicago that are distinguished by their large central domes and their icon screens, but none are as impressive as St. Nicholas, "The Wonderworker." The parish, founded in 1906, quickly outgrew a small wooden church. The current building was modeled after the 11th-century St. Sophia Cathedral in Kyiv, Ukraine. The Neo-Byzantine, Cossack-Rococo edifice has 13 green cupolas topped with gold crosses rising 167 feet into the sky, representing Christ and his 12 apostles. St. Nicholas is recognized for its magnificent icons, mosaics and stained-glass windows designed by Munich Studio of Chicago. Hanging from the highest dome in the center of the cathedral is a brilliant nine-tiered golden chandelier from Greece equipped with 480 lights. St. Nicholas Cathedral is a vibrant center of community life, welcoming new neighbors and offering relief to the weary and those in need. VISITOR EXPERIENCE: The Cathedral main floor and choir loft will be open to the public. Docents will be available to answer questions or to give guided tours. On Sunday, Divine Liturgy will be celebrated and access to the entire first floor will be limited until after the last service ends at around 1:00pm. Visit the main cathedral floor, the choir loft, and the lower level hall with restrooms. There is no entry into the Sacristy.
